REM- My Ishmael


In my picture there is a horse, a man, and a castle. I chose to draw this story because I think that it’s really nice of him to bring the horse back to the prince, instead of selling it to someone. The picture shows him bringing back the horse to the prince, in the castle. In the story there is a man bringing a horse to the prince and asks if the horse can stay in the prince’s stable. The prince told him how when he was a child, his father had a horse that looked just like the one the man had. The horse ended up running away. The prince asked the man how he would benefit from letting the horse stay in his stable. The man simply replied, “I thought you understood, Your Highness,” the stranger said. “This is the very horse that disappeared from your fathers stable when you were a boy. I’m only bringing back something that shouldn’t have left here in the first place.”

The message of Ishmael is that there is no one right way to live. This story is important to My Ishmael because this is the story Ishmael told to Nkemi to get into the country. Before Nkemi did not let him into the country, Ishmael told him this story and Nkemi let him in. It is really important because if he did not tell him this story, he wouldn’t have ever been in this country and wouldn’t have met Julie or Ishmael.

This I Believe

I believe that absence makes the heart grow fonder. When someone you love goes away for a period of time, you start to reminisce. You think of all the good times with that person, and all the good memories you made with them. In my opinion if you truly love that person, then all the bad memories will make you want to be with them more because you want to erase those memories with good ones.

Many people have love for their friends, and when their friends are away, this quote can apply to them too. Over summer vacation, I didn’t see many of my friends, and I really missed them. When school started again, it felt amazing to see them and catch up with them. I think that regardless of that type of love you have for someone, if you love them and they’re gone, you’ll really start to see what they meant to you. You’ll see how big of an impact that person is to your life. A lot of times my uncle goes out of the country on business trips, and when he’s gone it makes me realize how important he is to my whole family; he keeps the family together, and I love him for that.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. When you’re away from someone you really love, then you long to be with them. You can really decide whether you really want to be with this person, because when you’re always with them you can’t really judge if they’re the one for you. Being apart really makes you think about them and you’re relationship. It’s just like saying you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. When they’re gone you can really see what you love about them so much.

Every night I held the phone to my ear and had normal conversations with my boyfriend, and one night my mom took my phone away, and kept it for over two months. I didn’t know how I was going to talk to him, or if he even wanted to talk to me still. I felt as helpless as an abandoned puppy. Four days passed by, struggling without him. I asked my sister if I could borrow her phone, as I called him and heard his voice I couldn’t be happier, and neither could he. The moment we heard each other’s voices, it just felt so amazing. Your absence makes my heart grow fonder for you.

Evelyn Glennie Shows how to Listen

What struck you?
-What struck me was the fact that she was deaf. This struck me because a lot of deaf people can't talk and play music.

What did you notice?
-I noticed that she wasn't wearing shoes. She wasn't wearing them probably because she could feel the instruments vibrations through the floor.

What did you enjoy about her performance?
-I enjoyed when she played on the marimba because because she used four stick things at one time and had full control over all of them.

Sustainablity Visit


Questions:
1. What struck you about the location you visited? Was it what you expected, or very different?
What struck me was the location. I didn't expect the farmers market to be in the middle of otay ranch mall.

2. Which items were cheaper than you expected? Which were more expensive?
I didn't see the prices.



3. Do you think you will start going to a farmers market more often? Or using a community garden? Or supporting a CSA?
I really do like going to farmers markets, but my parents don't go to them. I'll try more to convince them to shop at them more often.



4. How do these locations fit into our essential questions of “Why Don’t People Live More Sustainably?” and “How Can I Convince them to do So?”
They relate to sustainable living and what we've been studying in class.

School Garden Question Reflection

Senior Questions:

1. Do people come in during summer to take care of the garden?
-The garden is new this year so we aren't sure how that part works.

2. Do you eat food from the garden?
-Yes.

3. Does everyone mend the garden?
-Only the people that really care about it.

4. Do some people get certain plants to take care of?
-Yes.

Reflection Questions:

1. Does this inspire you to start your own garden?
-It seemed really cool to have a garden and all, so yeah it did inspire me. Although i know if i start one i'm going to have to spend a lot of time on it.

2. What did you like/dislike about the garden?
-I like how there were a lot of different kind of plants. I don't like how the garden kind of seemed unorganized.

3.Would you like to continue the seniors work?
-The senior garden looks really nice and gardening seems really cool too, so i would like to continue their work.

Talking These Ideas Out


For this assignment i talked to my dad about Food Inc. He had already seen the documentary before me. What struck my dad the most was how evil Monsanto's company was, he thinks its wrong how Monsanto's is screwing everyone over. My dad agreed with the video because to him it just seemed so true and so obvious that things like this are really happening. He thinks we can apply these concepts to the real world by eating organic food and try to eat less high fructose corn syrup.

My Ishmael- School Daze Dialectic Journal


Quote: Do your teachers expect you to remember everything you learned last year?

Response: This quote is interesting to me because it talks about how children get into a new grade, but not remember anything from the previous grade. I can really relate to this quote, because i'll remember learning the things, but i won't remember what i learned. This makes it seem like school isn't very important because if the teachers teach us things that we won't remember, then what's the point of even going to school? I agree with Ishmael because even now i don't remember things that i learned from 8th grade. I would remember learning about the constitution but i wouldn't remember any details about it. If we were to review everything i learned last year, i would remember hearing all the topics, but i wouldn't remember all the details about them. This makes me think like what is the point of school? If a majority of kids don't remember anything from the past years, why do they makes us go to school? Eventually everyone is going to leave school or graduate from school and not remember what they learned, so whats the point of even going through all of that?

Tragedy- S is for Stab

S is for Stab

(Every line of Darwin’s is pronounced wrong)
[Darwin is crawling towards the fridge but is too short to open it]

Darwin
Juice! [Makes a mad face]

Mom
Oh, Darwin you want more juice?

Darwin
Yes! [Looks excited]

Mom
Maybe later Hun; you’ve had juice four times today.

Darwin
[Gets sad] Apple…

Mom
I’m sorry Darwin, would you like some apple sauce instead?

Darwin
No!

Mom
Okay then let’s go back and play in the sandbox.

Darwin
Okay.

Mom
Okay Darwin, you stay here and play in your sandbox; I’ll be right back, don’t go anywhere. [Walks inside the house]

Darwin
[Crawls out of sandbox, and under fence, into the forest]

Mom
[Finishes getting food and walks outside] Darwin...Darwin?! [Runs inside to call the police] Hello! Police! My baby is missing! Please come right away!

Darwin
[Crawling around the forest sees a man in a dark coat] Gahh.

Stranger
What was that? [Grins and picks up Darwin]

Darwin
Gahh?

[Stranger takes Darwin back to his lair]

Stranger
Come on baby, drink the juice [Grins] you know you want it.

Darwin
Meh, no [Looks away]
Stranger
What do you want baby? [Mutters under breath] Stupid, worthless baby….Do you want milk?

Darwin
No

Stranger
Do you want juice? [Gets irritated]

Darwin
Juice! [Smiles, pronounces wrong]

Stranger
[Grins] What kind of juice would you like, baby?

Darwin
Apple! [Pronounces wrong]

Stranger
Ahah apple eh? [Walks over to fridge and fills bottle with apple juice, opens small vile with a picture of skull and crossbones on it, and puts a couple drops into the bottle. Goes back to Darwin] Drink away baby. [Grins]

Darwin
Apple! [Giggles]

Stranger
[Gives juice bottle to Darwin] Drink up.

Darwin
[Drinks apple] Gah!

[Hears mom off in the distance]

Stranger
What was that? [Goes outside to inspect]

Mom
[Goes inside the lair, and sees Darwin] Darwin! [Runs over to take Darwin out of baby seat]

Stranger
Stop! Where are you going! [Runs over and grabs mom]

Mom
[Gently tosses baby onto the floor] Run Darwin!


Darwin
Gah. [Quickly crawls towards door]

Stranger
[Slaps mom] Woman now look at what you’ve done! [Drags over to a separate room, locks mom inside. Runs after baby]

[Darwin is seen in the forest crying by the lake. Stranger sees him and walks over]

Stranger
What’s wrong baby? Can’t cross the lake?

Darwin
Gah! [Quickly crawls away]

Stranger
Oh don’t be like that. [Picks up Darwin]

[Mom is in the background quickly running over]

Stranger
Now let’s just get you bac--

[Mom shows up and stabs stranger in the back of the head]

Stranger
[Drops baby] Augh! [Falls to the ground into the lake]

Mom
Darwin, honey, are you okay?! [Cuddles Darwin and starts crying]

[Mom and baby go back to the house. One week later]

Police
[Knocks on door]

Mom
[Opens door] Err yes?

Police
Ma’am it has been reported that you stabbed this man [Police holds up picture] in the back of the head with this knife. [Police holds up knife]

Mom
Well that would be correct officer, but you see—

Police
That is all we need to know. [Police drag mom to the police car, not noticing Darwin in his playpen.]

Darwin
Momma! [Crawls out the door, sees police car pass through the forest and heads that direction]

[We see Darwin get to the lake and slip and falls into the lake. Darwin drowns in the lake]

Semester Acedemic Goals-Humanities

Goal: Pay attention in class.
First Step: Actually think about the lessons instead of just writing it down.

Goal: Turn in work on time.
First Step: Go to office hours to make sure I'm getting work done.

Goal: Raise my grades to the best it can be.
First Step: I can try the extra credit work, so that way I can have a better understanding of what I'm working on, and to learn more.
